One of the most watched sports events in the world, the Super Bowl is the scene of magnificent shows every year.
The Super Bowl is a very popular sporting event held annually to determine the champion of the American National Football League (NFL). Millions of people gather around their television sets on a Sunday in January or February to watch this match. Broadcast in more than 170 countries, the Super Bowl is among the most watched sporting events in the world with its spectacular halftime shows and engaging commercials. After this match, the football season, which started in the summer of the previous year, ends. Let’s take a look at the things that are curious about the Super Bowl together.
A brief history of the Super Bowl
Inspired by the British Rugby sport, American football is a popular sport in which the players of two separate teams control the ball by holding the ball in their hands, and the teams earn points by passing the ball between the scorer posts or touching the ball in the scoring area. The 1869 match between Rutgers and Princeton is considered the first American football match. Although the American National Football League (NFL) was officially founded in 1920, the Super Bowl was not played until 1967. In the 1960s, a group of business people started an alternative league called the American Football League (AFL).
Since then, there has been a great rivalry between the NFL and AFL leagues. The first Super Bowl between the AFL champion Kansas City Chiefs and the NFL champion Green Bay Packers was played on January 15, 1967. The first name of this game was “AFL-NFL World Championship Game”. Later, Kansas City Chiefs owner Lamar Hunt suggested using the term “Super Bowl” to refer to the championship game. After the leagues merged, the NFL was split into two separate conferences: the American Football Conference (AFC) and the National Football Conference (NFC). After that date, a separate match was held between the champions of the two conferences. Thus, the champion of the league began to be determined.
Bands were played in the first championship matches. Then popular musicians started performing at halftime. Some viewers see this 30-minute short-circuit show as something bigger than the game. So far, famous artists have taken the stage during the half term. Artists and groups such as Michael Jackson, U2, Madonna, Bruce Springsteen, Lady Gaga, Paul McCartney, Prince, Beyonce, Coldplay can be given as examples.
The first Super Bowl between Kansas City and Green Bay was broadcast on two different channels. This match was watched by 26 million people on CBS and 24 million on NBC. The start of halftime shows has led to an increase in the number of viewers every year. For example, Super Bowl III was watched by 41 million people. The match between New England and Seattle on February 1, 2015 reached a record high with 114 million viewers.
2022 Super Bowl
In 2021, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers defeated the Kansas City Chiefs to win their 55th Super Bowl. This year, the big match was between the Los Angeles Rams and the Cincinnati Bengals. At the end of the match, the Rams won their first Super Bowl title since the 1999 season. On the other hand, Dr. Dre, Eminem, Snoop Dogg, Kendrik Lamar and Mary J. Blige took the stage in the highly anticipated halftime show of the Super Bowl this year.
The Super Bowl is not only the world’s most watched match, but also the show of strength for brands. Many of the world’s leading brands present their striking advertisements to the audience during this famous match. In these advertisements, world-famous names appear in front of the camera. On the other hand, Turkish Airlines’ new commercial was screened in the 56th Super Bowl. This commercial, called Pangea, starring Morgan Freeman, is about the time when the world was a single continent.
