Our Lives in Parallel Universes
Let’s dive into interesting worlds together today.
Let’s talk about universes in which we are rich, some crazy, some disabled, some criminals, cute or sullen, mischievous, innocent, maybe sinful, blue-eyed, Italian, French, doctor or shepherd on a deserted mountain, each of which has different possibilities.
Years ago, the scientist Hugh Everett, in his twenties, was in a similar conversation with his friends, many of whom had graduated from physics. These topics fell within the scope of quantum mechanics, and the conversation was based on parallel universe and superposition.
(To put it briefly for those who do not know, superposition is the absence of fundamental particles such as electrons in a single state, that is, being in more than one place, velocity and direction at the same time until it is measured. You cannot measure the position and velocity of a particle at the same time.)
However, as we are accustomed to in the macro universe we live in, something was either in one place or in another. It was certainty, not probability. In the macro universe, there was no uncertainty or superposition as in the micro universe. By the way, this is also the case, because if we saw a person in superposition in the macro universe, we would lose our minds.
The issue that bothered scientists here was this:
While the micro and macro universes are very similar to each other except for some physics rules, was it possible to talk about possibilities and superposition in the macro universe as well?
Our universe did not consist of a single reality, did everything we experience, everything that exists, appear as one of the millions of possibilities that could come true?
It was possible to explain this possibility only with parallel universes. In other words, a state of superposition where we can be in many universes at the same time…
Sounds so fantastic doesn’t it?
This is exactly why Everett’s theory sounded crazy at first, but later it was talked about a lot among physicists. Being a subject that science fiction also jumped on, it found a place in popular culture and managed to attract the attention of even millions of people who are news about quantum theory. Of course, the success of The Butterfly Effect, Interstellar and other science fiction films about multiverses was undeniable in attracting the attention of the public.
In fact, the philosophy in these films was not exactly what Everett told, but when it was simplified, the theory was interpreted in this way.
With every decision we made in life, we were opening up to new universes. From the people we meet, to our career choices, the person we marry, the place we live in, what we eat and what we listen to… An alternative to each decision was made in a different way in another universe.
With every choice we make, we create a new universe, and in some, we become notorious killers.
Was this even possible?
For example, was it possible to leave behind the disasters that are happening around the world and sail to other universes?
Although we do not have a chance to know for sure, there are some reasons why this prediction should be possible.
For example, one reason that might indicate the possibility of multiverses is that the universe is very, very large. It is so large that it does not seem possible for us to explore its limits definitively. It’s already stable, not stable either. It continues to expand. It feels like we could start from Earth and go forever in any direction. In the face of this greatness, there may be multiverses for many of us.
Part of the reason the theory finds support is because we want to know what happened before the big bang.
So what happened that explosion occurred?
Human nature is curious!
We can’t help but think about it.
Our brain wants to find a logical solution to every question.
Multiverses can be partly the answer to this, too. Some physicists call the infinite parts of the multiverses membranes. We can liken these selectively permeable membranes to parallel slices of bread. Bread slices of different sizes. However, we cannot perceive these different dimensions. Because in our own membrane, we only know the three dimensions of space, namely width, height and height, as well as the dimension of time.
If we pay attention, we still haven’t given an answer to one of our questions.
So how do these parallel universes explain the big bang?
The answer is that somehow these membranes, the universes, collide with each other. Moreover, these collisions are so violent that they cause a big explosion like the Big Bang every time. In this way, multiverses are born again.
Moreover, scientists offer evidence for this assumption,
For example, the scars discovered by the Planck telescope of the European space agency (ESA) in space!
This telescope has been collecting data on the cosmic microwave background radiation for some time, along with many of its studies in space. Some of the researchers studying this glow, which has been sending messages since the early universe, believe that the circular patterns in this photo are evidence of multiverses. According to his predictions, these patterns could be the scars of our universe colliding with other universes.
However, let’s not get too caught up in this theory of parallel universes, which has the possibility that we may even be princes or princesses, because there is no solid evidence that there are universes apart from the evidence above.
There is no proof, but there is a saying that I love:
Absence of evidence is not evidence of absence.
Especially when science is at the very beginning of the road next to reality.
As it is known, what is thought not to exist today may exist tomorrow.
What my idol Albert Einstein says:
“Compared to reality, the level we have reached in science is primitive, child’s play. But it is the most precious thing we have.”
