The fact that individuals feel inadequate in the relationships they have established or that they have unsatisfactory social experiences in the relationships they have lived can affect their lives in many ways. This can cause individuals to isolate themselves from society and feel lonely.

Loneliness is a fact that is known as the precursor of many pathological mental problems and personality disorders, and is observed to be experienced intensely in all societies. Loneliness is generally known as the state of being physically alone in society. In the literature, the concept of loneliness is generally expressed as “a disturbing, psychological state that arises due to the difference and contradiction between the social relationships that the individual lives and the relationships he/she wants to live”.

Weiss , in his theory called Emotional and Social Isolation, suggested that the insufficiency of one or more of the six types of relationships is effective in the emergence of loneliness. These:

  • Social Integration: Creating a community of social relations with the people around.
  • Opportunity to Live: Relationships in which the individual feels responsible for the well-being and health of other people.
  • Reassurance of Worth: Recognizing an individual’s talents, skills, and achievements. Relationships that matter.
  • Reliable Alliance: Relationships where an individual can get help.
  • Guidance: Relationships where the individual can receive advice and support.

An important dimension of loneliness was also expressed by Moustakes. Mentioning that there are two different dimensions of loneliness that should be emphasized, Moustakes addressed them as positive and negative aspects. Moustakes[6], who points out the difference between existential loneliness and loneliness anxiety as another dimension, states that existential loneliness is an inevitable situation in human life, it includes the process of confronting oneself and contributes to self-development. The opposite of this situation, the anxiety of loneliness is a negative experience and leads to the alienation of people from people.

Interpretation of Results
The highest score you can get on this test is 60, while the lowest is 0. While your sense of loneliness increases as you approach 60 points, your sense of loneliness decreases as you approach 0 points.

Measuring your loneliness score does not mean that it is a mental disorder by itself. Loneliness, depression, etc. seen in many mental disorders; but it is not a per se inconvenience. A high score does not give you an idea about making any diagnosis. However, if the score is high, you may need to think about why you are alone and how to get out of this situation. If you feel powerless and helpless in the fight against this problem, it is time to seek spiritual support. We recommend that you consult a psychologist or psychiatrist without delay.
