Who is Gianni Versace?
Giovanni Maria “Gianni” Versace was born on December 2, 1946 in the city of Reggio Calabria, in the south of Italy, as the middle child of a family of 3 children.

First years
His mother, Francesca, has a tailor shop and Gianni Versace took his first steps in his profession by being an apprentice in this shop at an early age. She became interested in architecture before moving to Milan at the age of 26 to study fashion design. He has worked at several Italian workshops in Milan, including Genny, Complice, Mario Valentino and Callaghan.

The Birth of Versace
Gianni Versace founded his own company Versace SpA in 1978 and held his first ready-to-wear show under his own name in the same year. His older brother Santo became the CEO, and his sister Donatella became the designer and vice president of the company.

Fashion Giant Versace
In less than 10 years, Gianni Versace has created an empire worth $808 million. Madonna has used celebrities such as Jon Bon Jovi, Tina Turner, Tupac Shakur and Naomi Campbell in her advertisements. His clients have included Michael Jackson, Phil Collins, Bruce Springsteen, George Michael, Eric Clapton and Elton John.

Sources of Inspiration
He was strongly influenced by ancient Greek history, the American painter and filmmaker Andy Warhol, and another American Painter, Roy Lichtenstein.

The Versace logo is the head of Medusa, a Greek mythological figure. Gianni Versace chose Medusa as his logo; He explained that Medusa made people fall in love with him and that there was no return.

Series and Film Industry
Gianni Versace has also designed the costumes of many movies and TV series. These include Ballet for Life, Jugde Dredd, Shakespeare Shorts, Showgirls, Kika, Vacanzi di Natale, Cin Cin, As Long as It’s Love and Miami Vice.

The famous fashion designer also took part in the 1996 film “Catwalk”.

One of the biggest innovations Versace brought to the fashion world was the invention of a type of super light chain armor called ‘Oroton’ in 1982. It has become a signature on her outfits.


Gianni Versace was shot and killed by serial killer Andrew Cunanan on June 15, 1997, at the age of 50, outside his home in Miami Beach, Florida.

Versace’s body was cremated, his ashes were taken to the family’s property near Cernobbio and placed in the family vault at the Moltrasio cemetery near Lake Como.

More than 2,000 people attended Versace’s funeral at Milan Cathedral, including Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy, Naomi Campbell, Elton John, and Diana, Princess of Wales, who died in a car crash a month later.

Andrew Cunanan
Cunanan committed suicide in a boathouse eight days after Versace’s murder. As far as is known, Cunanan is obsessed with the designer and has often bragged about his close “friendship” with Versace. However, the accuracy of these claims of Cunanan could not be proven. The FBI said that Cunanan and Versace must have had an acquaintance, but the Versace family denied it.
