Executed Philosophers, Philosophy without Consolation

While Aristotle, the teacher of scholars, said, “All people by nature want to know” in 350 BC, and discussions about how we know throughout the history of philosophy, whether it is reason, perception, sense, intuition or remembering, it was unpredictable that today’s people would distance themselves so much.

The people of the new world, who have increasing technological possibilities, are able to understand the world, the universe, the structure of the cell, etc. While trying to understand in the name of science, in the trap of worldly and capitalist pleasures, he unfortunately forgot to know his essence and went against nature. With the agenda imposed by the big companies, the people of the new world are now condemned to drawing red, gluten-free bread, the movie that must be watched that day, the emotion they are told to feel, the diets they must do, without knowing what they really want or what they are. Human beings, who are increasingly unhappy and cannot even describe their feelings, have started to seek solace in the sad lyrics of songs, shopping, anti-depressants and even vitamins. While social values left their place to individuality, naturally, philosophers handed over their thrones to gurus and, very bitterly, to sect sheikhs.

Among the dozens of philosophers who were sentenced to death or lynched for their thoughts, names such as Socrates, Seneca, Cicero, Boethius, Bruno, Hypatia, Thomas More thought at the expense of their lives and made them think.

Their thoughts, philosophies, beliefs, and disbelief were not just words but substance.“Why do bad things happen to good people?” The Roman philosopher Boethius, who questioned the question of faith and reason, fate and free will, in his book The Consolation of Philosophy, found solace in philosophy while awaiting his execution in prison on charges of treason. He was accused of treason and executed without trial.

The founder of moral philosophy, the first great Greek philosopher, Socrates, who found the method of reaching the truth by constantly asking questions, was told that he provoked young people, put nonsense in their minds, etc. “Be true to yourself!” He stood by his thought and was willing to give his life with hemlock for the sake of philosophy.

It was decided that the astronomer, mathematician and female philosopher Hypatia, who said that the world is in the shape of an ellipse, should be killed on the charges of irreligion and demonism for her work and thoughts. Their meat was cut with seashells, they were cut to pieces and lynched.

The philosopher, priest, astronomer Bruno, who shaped the philosophy of the Renaissance, was tried in prison for eight years for blasphemy, immorality and blasphemy, and defended his honor at the cost of his life, despite the inquisition saying that he would be pardoned if he renounced his thoughts and accepted that he was a heretic.

It was decided that she should be tortured and killed without shedding blood.

Stoic philosopher, statesman, and playwright Seneca, who stood against bigotry throughout his life and put his mind at the center of his thoughts, argued that the real virtue is inside the person, that the wealth outside will not bring happiness to people.

Like Socrates, Seneca, who defended that death should be disregarded all her life, also carried out her execution with fortitude with her own hands.
Cicero, agnostic, great Roman orator, scholar, statesman and writer, who contributed to the development of the Latin language as the language of philosophy, was also among those executed by beheading for hostility to the state.

What all these philosophers had in common was that they were contrary to the age in which they lived, and that they provided change with their execution. Philosophy did not give them wings, maybe not prevent them from falling off the cliff, but it did affect those who came after it.

Today, the situation is rather strange. Thought criminals are still in jail. Philosophy is no longer consolation. In essence, thoughts remained only in words, and the words of philosophers began to circulate in social media posts with the copy-paste method. Some of the guest speakers at conferences, friends and television programs use the words of philosophers without knowing the essence, history, theory, in short, nothing. Socrates has a saying that, as Nietzsche said, philosophy, which was used in such a way as to know what Descartes had said, was thus left without consolation. However, the meaning of philosophy is “to love knowledge”, to fall in love with knowledge, to feel the lack of knowledge.

Where is that old heartbreaking information!
