Biontech Content Details and Side Effects

The COVID-19 vaccine produced by Pfizer-BioNTech is a vaccine that was approved for emergency use on December 11, 2020, for individuals aged 16 and over. Biontech vaccine is mRNA (messenger RNA) based vaccine. It gives your cells instructions on how to make a protein called the “spike” of the coronavirus. Your immune system recognizes this protein as foreign and develops a response, including antibodies, against it.

Biontech Vaccine Event
Biontech vaccine requires two doses and ideally two doses 6-8 weeks apart for full effect. A 2021 study published in The Lancet states that the vaccine has a high efficacy rate of up to 85% after a single dose. Public Health England (PHE) reanalyzed a study previously published in the New England Journal of Medicine on the efficacy of the Biontech vaccine. Based on this analysis, it determined that it had an 89 percent efficacy rate for days 15 to 21 after the first dose and before the second dose on day 21. At the end of the second dose, Biontech vaccine protection was reported as 95.3 percent.

Vaccine efficacy is the measure of how well a vaccine works in a clinical trial in a controlled setting in a given population. Real-world efficiency may be lower for several reasons. However, this is not considered a reflection of the vaccine. The Biontech vaccine has been found to reduce transmissions by approximately 90%, including asymptomatic ones, in a “real world” setting. Clinical trials only examine what happens with the virus at a given time. However, when the vaccine is given to the general population, the prevalence of the virus may have changed or new variants may emerge. This is one reason why its real-world effectiveness differs from clinical trial results.

In addition to mRNA, Biontech vaccine contains lipids ((4hydroxybutyl)azanediyl)bis(hexane-6,1-diyl)bis(2-hexyldecanoate), 2 [(polyethylene glycol)-2000]-N,N-ditetradecylacetamide, 1, 2-Distearoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine and cholesterol), potassium chloride, monobasic potassium phosphate, sodium chloride, dibasic sodium phosphate dihydrate and sucrose components.

Biontech Side Effects
Based on the large number of people closely monitored during the studies, the patient safety profile was very successful in terms of side effects. The side effects of the Biontech vaccine can be listed as follows:

PAIN IN THE ENVIRONMENT OF INJECTION
The Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine is administered to the person in two doses, 3 weeks apart. To date, vaccine-related safety data have been collected from 37,586 participants enrolled in an ongoing phase 3 clinical trial. The most frequently reported side effect of the vaccine is the injection site reaction. Such reactions may cause some pain and other symptoms in the area where the vaccine was injected. Sometimes you may experience some redness, some warmth, slight swelling or stiffness at the injection site. This is very typical of vaccines. You may be sensitive to such symptoms and may feel pain when moving your arm. Injection site reactions were reported by 84% of participants who received the vaccine.

SKIN REACTIONS
Rarely, it happens that people develop skin reactions after being vaccinated. Such reactions appear as rashes, large red spots, and other skin symptoms around the injection site. Researchers have found evidence that such symptoms are caused by a delayed allergic reaction. Reactions are usually limited to the area around the injection site and are not serious. Symptoms disappear in 2 to 11 days.

FAILURE, HEAD AND MUSCLE PAIN
Other commonly reported side effects of the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine include fatigue, headache, and muscle pain. Fatigue was reported by roughly 63% of vaccinated research subjects. Headache and muscle pain affected 55 and 38% of the study subjects, respectively. In most cases, these symptoms were mild and disappeared within 1 day. Fewer participants reported symptoms of chills, joint pain, or fever after vaccination. After participants received the second dose of the vaccine, they were more likely to report such symptoms.

Serious symptoms are rare. The reported rate of serious adverse events among people who received the vaccine and placebo in the same way was less than 0.5%, and there was no significant difference between the two groups. Four hundred cases of paralysis were reported in participants receiving the vaccine, while no cases were reported in those receiving placebo. However, these four cases are consistent with the rate of facial paralysis in the general population. In other words, there is no clear evidence that facial paralysis is caused by the Biontech vaccine.

Severe allergic reactions to vaccines are very rare, but they are also possible. The FDA (American Food and Drug Administration) recommends that people who have a severe allergic reaction to the first dose of Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine or any of its ingredients should not be vaccinated.

What to Do Against Common Side Effects?
You can aim to schedule your vaccinations at a time when it is easier to deal with potential side effects such as fatigue or headaches. For example, it wouldn’t make much sense to get vaccinated early in the day, on the way to work in the morning. If possible, you can get vaccinated on a day off. If you feel pain at the injection site, you can treat it with over-the-counter medications. Such medications can also help relieve fever, headache, muscle pain or joint pain. If you experience side effects that are very annoying or do not go away, you should contact a healthcare provider. If you think you have developed a severe allergic reaction, you should call 911 or go to the emergency room.
