According to an article published two weeks ago, small, unique antibody-like proteins, known as VNARs, derived from sharks’ immune systems; It prevents the virus that causes COVID-19, its variants and related coronaviruses from infecting human cells.

While these new variants won’t be used for immediate therapeutic use in humans, they may help prepare for future coronavirus diseases. Shark VNARs can neutralize the WIV1-CoV coronavirus, which can infect human cells but circulates only in bats for now. It is thought that the SARS-CoV-2 virus that causes COVID-19 may have originated from bats.

“The big problem here is that there are a number of coronaviruses waiting to emerge in humans,” says Aaron LeBeau, professor of disease science at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, who led the study. “We are also preparing a therapeutic arsenal of shark VNARs that can be used in future SARS outbreaks. It’s kind of like insurance against the future.”
